For the "Do It Yourself' type "this is a chance to ask all kinds of building-related questions. The class will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. at Parker Town Hall, located at 20120 E. Mainstreet.

The Building Department staff will inform Parker residents about the permit process, explain fees and required inspections. This is a great opportunity to meet the people who will help you with the application and plan review process and also to meet with the field inspectors.

The Town of Parker is known to be very picky so it makes good sense to listen to their instructions!

Railbender Skate & Tennis Park Opening soon!

There will be a dedication on Monday, Nov. 3 at 4 p.m.The park is located at the southwest corner of Twenty Mile Road and Plaza Drive, just west of the Parker Fieldhouse.

The eight-acre Railbender Park includes a new skate park, four tennis courts, two picnic shelters, restroom facilities and a playground. Town Council has long seen a need to enhance both the skate and tennis facilities in our community.

Mainstreet Streetscape Project Update Update for Oct. 23, 2008 Upcoming detours!

Beginning on Sunday, Oct. 26, removal and replacement of the existing concrete paving in the West Victorian intersection will begin. Once the removal has been completed, they will begin placement of the new concrete pavement throughout the intersection beginning Monday, Oct. 27 with an anticipated reopening of the intersection late in the day Wednesday, Oct. 29.

This work will require that the intersection be completely closed from 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, through approximately 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29. This will require a complete closure of Mainstreet, with no vehicular traffic on Mainstreet between the west Victorian intersection and Pikes Peak Drive to the west. Pedestrian traffic will be allowed for access to downtown businesses.

ALL of Mainstreet traffic will be diverted to the following detours:

Westbound traffic from East Mainstreet, wanting to use Mainstreet, will be detoured at Pikes Peak to the south. West bound traffic will also be able to turn north on East Victorian and proceed to Longs Way.

Eastbound Mainstreet traffic will be detoured to the south at the Wells Fargo bank entrance through the parking lot area and may either proceed to Rodeo Drive or to Pikes Peak and go north or south on Pikes Peak.

Traffic that is southbound on Longs Way will not be able to get through the West Victorian and Mainstreet intersection, but will still be able to access parking at O'Brien Park, the 20-Mile Building or the Parker Station parking area from either West Victorian or East Victorian.

Please be advised that Mainstreet in the downtown area will not be reopened to traffic until the afternoon on Wednesday, Oct. 29. It is anticipated that both the Victorian loop and Mainstreet will re-open at that time. Please understand that these time frames are weather dependent, but every reasonable effort will be made to meet this schedule.

Detour signing will be in-place as of 7 a.m. on Sunday morning, Oct. 26. Please seek alternate routes for access to Parker Road and to Pine Drive. Visit the Town's Web site at www.parkeronline.org for alternate routes around the construction area.

Businesses in the downtown area can still be accessed by parking in public areas on Pilgrims Place off Pikes Peak Drive, behind the Parker Station building, the 20-Mile building or O'Brien Park.

Thanksgiving Dinners for Parker Task Force Clients

We have a goal for 2008 to again provide a Thanksgiving dinner to each client family that wishes to receive one. This year the Parker Task Force expects to provide Thanksgiving dinner to 250 families. The number of families we assist in the Parker, Franktown and Elizabeth areas has grown 31% in 2008 over 2007.

We need your help to make our Thanksgiving Dinner project a success and to meet our goal of providing a Thanksgiving meal to all of our clients that request one.

To help us you can either donate a food basket or money for prepared meals.

1. Food Baskets – Compile complete Thanksgiving dinners that families can prepare at home, packaged in baskets/tubs/boxes for a family of 4-6 people. Deliver to the conference room in the Parker Task Force building at 20118 E. Mainstreet between 10am & 2pm on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2007. Clients will pick them up later that day.

What to put in the basket/box/tub - a complete Thanksgiving dinner - for example:

Frozen turkey
Aluminum turkey pan
Dinner rolls
2 sticks of butter
Bag of potatoes
Stuffing
Frozen pie
Gravy,
packets or jars Can of cranberries
Vegetables (canned or frozen)
Bag of Salad Greens and dressing
Can of sweet potatoes

Please put items needing refrigeration/freezing in grocery bags so we can store them in the refrigerators until the meals are picked up later in the day. Please bag freezer items and refrigerator items in separate bags. OR

2. Monetary Donations – Monetary donations will be used to purchase prepared Thanksgiving dinners from local grocery store deli departments for our client families who can not cook their own meals. We will purchase the meals, contact clients and arrange for them to pick them up. Each meal for a family of 4-6 costs about $45.00. Checks may be made payable to the Parker Task Force (memo: Thanksgiving dinners). Monetary donations may be mailed to the Parker Task Force, Attn: Diane Roth, at 20118 East Mainstreet, Unit D, Parker, CO 80138.

Set up a "Code Adam" at your business..

This is a great idea from the Town of Parker Mailings....

Does your business have a standard operating procedure in the event a child is reported lost or missing to one of your employees? A program endorsed by the National Center of Missing & Exploited Children has a program to assist your business in implementing a standard operating procedure in the event a child is reported lost or missing; "Code Adam."
The program consists of six program steps that are easy for you and your employees to follow. Most children who are lost or reported missing in business establishments are found within 10 minutes after a Code Adam activation.
There is no cost to participate in this program. Simply fill out the form at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) Web site at www.missingkids.com and the NCMEC will mail you a free Code Adam kit.
Many businesses nationwide have already taken a proactive stance and participate in the Code Adam Program; Wal Mart, Albertson's Groceries, Office of the Attorney General, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Federal Protective Services, to name a few.
Code Adam was created and named in memory of 6-year-old Adam Walsh. In 1981 Adam was abducted from a Florida shopping mall and later found murdered. This incident brought national attention to the horror of child abduction. Since the beginning of the Code Adam program in 1994 it has been a powerful search tool for lost and possibly abducted children in tens of thousands of establishments across the nation, and it is one of the country's largest child-safety programs.

Ongoing Saga of Mainstreet Construction

Per the Town of Parker -
"Next week, the contractor will begin removal of the existing sidewalk from Pikes Peak west, on the south side of Mainstreet. They anticipate starting the placement of the new sidewalk in this area by Thursday following installation work by the lighting and landscape subcontractors of their respective infrastructure.

They also plan to continue the curb and gutter removal and replacement from West Victorian to the west, on the south side of the street. Traffic will continue to be shifted to detour routes as various lane closures will be needed during working hours. This will give them access to the eastbound lanes during the day. There are no complete Mainstreet closures anticipated this week.

The lighting and traffic system sub-contractor will be working on placing additional signal lights on the newly erected traffic signal poles, and they also will be placing lighting conduit and bases along the south side of Mainstreet west of Pikes Peak prior to sidewalk placement.

The irrigation and landscaping sub-contactor will be working in this same area, placing conduit for irrigation of the new trees that will eventually be placed along this section. They will also begin working on repairing the existing irrigation and landscaping that has been damaged during construction.

There will be traffic control devices and flagging personnel in the area during working hours to assist vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Please be aware that the flagging personnel are there for you're your safety. Please be courteous and respectful as you pass through the project.

If you are driving or walking in the construction area, please be aware of all the equipment and workers in the immediate construction area, and proceed with extreme caution.

Restricted parking areas along Mainstreet will continue on both sides of the street as the construction activities go on. Please continue parking in outlying areas or parking lots.

The sidewalk in the park area, along the north side of Mainstreet at O'Brien Park and on both sides of west Victorian is still somewhat restricted. If you are in the park, please stay on the park (north) side of the orange safety fence for your own safety. Please be very cautious when crossing Mainstreet, and if driving through Mainstreet, watch for pedestrians.

E-Cycling Event to be held on Oct. 18

The Town, along with Waste Management Recycle America, is holding an “e-cycle,” or Electronics Recycling event on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Town Hall, located at 20120 E. Mainstreet. Vehicles should enter the event from the roundabout on E. Mainstreet.

Over 400 Parker area residents participated in our last E-Cycling event, generating approximately three semi-trailer trucks of electronic waste. An estimated 60,000 pounds of electronic waste was collected.

There is a nominal fee for e-waste recycling. Fees must be paid by cash or check only. Here is a list of the most common items:

Laptop: No Charge

Monitor: $18

CPU: No Charge

Keyboard: No Charge

Desktop Printer: $3

Laser Printer: $5

Printed Circuit Board: No Charge

Plastic Television: $18

Wood Television: $25

Big Screen Television: (36 inches or larger): $25

Microwave: $15

Cell Phone: No Charge

All other electronic equipment will be charged between $3 and 25, depending on the size of the item.

The Parker Task Force will be at the event accepting canned food donations. For two cans of food, you will receive $2 off your recycling fee. For five cans, you will receive half off your total charge. The Task Force will also collect used cell phones, which will be refurbished and given to families in need.

If you would like to bring old electronics from your business please call ahead so event organizers can make the proper arrangements.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), electronics make up approximately 1 percent of municipal solid waste. More than 3.2 million tons of electronic waste is discarded in U.S. landfills each year, with an estimated 50 million computers becoming obsolete annually. However, most material can be salvaged and reused.

Parker Arts Council Upcoming events including Halloween for Horses

Halloween with Horses will be on October 18 this year.
Which means, we have to really scramble to get both the upstairs Haunted House built and the downstairs Kid's area complete.
If you or an older sibling are interested in helping build the set please let me know.
If you or an older sibling are only interested in being a scare actor on the day of the event - let me know.
We also need volunteers to work the Kid's area. It's a LOT of fun and hey.... you will get community service hours having FUN!

We have some other things in the works for November and December as well and of course the Asian Festival in January!
As always we have Youth Open Mic Night on the second Wednesday of each month at the CrossWalk Bookstore and Cafe'.

Please check out the PAC website at www.parkerartscouncil.org we are still looking for a couple more interns to join the PAC, it's a great learning experience for highschool age childen, they have fun working with the PAC doing all these events, learn how to build sets, have fun... maybe MC and event, learn and help share the PAC information at the school they attend and did I mention have FUN. Oh and by the way..... the interns earn $500 at the end of the year for being an intern and once they put in the required hours for the PAC - any other hours go towards their highschool community service requirement. Please feel free to pass along this information to anyone you might know that would be interested!

Join the Town of Parker and the on-site Mainstreet Construction project manager on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 8 a.m. at the 20 Mile Coffee Shop on Mainstreet for a monthly project update meeting. This meeting is open to all local businesses and residents.

Next week, the contractor will continue the removal and replacement of the curb, gutter and sidewalk on the south side of Mainstreet from the east side of the Parker Mainstreet Center to or through the East Victorian intersection. They will also continue to place the sidewalk on the south side of Mainstreet between Pikes Peak and East Victorian. They will place the drain that carries storm water across the sidewalk on the east side of the Sage building and begin working on the remainder of the lateral sidewalk drains in front of Parker Station. While this work is underway, traffic will continue to be shifted in the morning and the evening as they have been for the past week.

Beginning on Friday, Oct. 3, removal of the existing concrete paving in the East Victorian intersection will begin. Once the removal has been completed, they will begin placement of the new concrete pavement throughout the intersection on Saturday. This work will require that the intersection be completely closed through the weekend, until Monday morning, Oct. 6 after the concrete has gained enough strength to allow travel across it.

ALL of Mainstreet traffic will be diverted to the following detours:

Westbound traffic from East Mainstreet, wanting to use Mainstreet, will be detoured to Sommerset Lane from Pine Drive to Victorian Drive then back to west bound Mainstreet.

East bound Mainstreet traffic will be detoured from West Victorian Drive to Sommerset Lane, to Pine Drive.

Northbound Pikes Peak traffic will only be able to go westbound on Mainstreet.

There will be traffic control devices and flagging personnel in the area during working hours to assist vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Please be aware that the flagging personnel are there for your safety. Please be courteous and respectful as you pass through the project.

The lighting contractor will be working in the Pikes Peak intersection placing the two signal poles on the south side of the intersection, and the mast arms for the traffic signals across the intersection. They may also hang some traffic signals at that time.

If you are driving or walking in the construction area, please be aware of all the equipment and workers in the immediate construction area, and proceed with extreme caution.

Restricted parking areas along Mainstreet will continue on both sides of the street as the construction activities go on. Please continue parking in outlying areas or parking lots.

The sidewalk in the park area, along the north side of Mainstreet at O'Brien Park and on both sides of west Victorian is still somewhat restricted. If you are in the park, please stay on the park (north) side of the orange safety fence for your own safety. Please be very cautious when crossing Mainstreet, and if driving through Mainstreet, watch for pedestrians.

Mike Bard Holiday Baseball Camp!

"The teaming up of the Parker Fieldhouse and baseball instructor Mike Bard has provided an amazing opportunity for kids from Parker and beyond. The indoor facility allows youth to get field time during the winter. 100,000 square feet of sports turf, cages and other surfaces will be available to Mike's staff and the campers.

The 2007 Parker Holiday Camp was a great success, and the interest in the 2008 camp began immediately after last year's camp was over. "We (Mike Bard Baseball) get several emails a day asking to be informed about the 2008 Holiday Camp in Parker. It's amazing how word has spread so quickly among the baseball circles. People are not only coming from all over the state of Colorado, but also from nearby states like Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wyoming."

Phillip, a dad of a 2007 camper from Parker, had this to say about the camp: "I tell everyone I know in baseball about this camp. It was amazing to me that my boys could actually get winded at a baseball camp. Everything went so smoothly, the boys went from station to station, with no time to stand around or goof off. To me it was like the kids got two weeks of practice and instruction in just two days."

Mike's staff will include enough coaches to have one coach for every 10 campers. The quality of the instruction is very one-on-one, with adjustments being made according to the needs of the child. Kerrick, age 11, was at the camp last year. "My favorite coach was Clint Barmes. He really taught us how to stay back on the ball. He was also very nice.and funny." Brawna, a mom from Franktown, says "it's an ideal Christmas gift for the ultimate baseball lover," and says her son and his friends will be the first ones to sign up again this year when registration opens.

This year's Holiday Baseball Camp will be held at the Parker Fieldhouse, 18700 E. Plaza Drive, on Dec. 27 and 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. Baseball players ages six to 18 can register for camp online at www.ParkerRec.com. Click the online registration icon and search with keywords Holiday Baseball. Registration fees are $195 for Parker residents, $215 for non-residents.

"Mainstreet Streetscape Improvement Project Update; Aug. 22, 2008:

The Town of Parker says.....
"Next week, the contractor will continue placing sidewalk, sidewalk and more sidewalk. They will complete the placement in front of the 20-Mile building and then move to the south side of Parker Station. Again, this will require numerous placements as there are three different colors of concrete involved. Pedestrians are asked to access the 20-Mile building from the west while this area is being completed. The orange temporary fence along the 20-Mile building should be gone by the end of the week.

Sturgeon Electric will be placing underground electrical conduit in front of Parker Station for street lighting, ahead of the sidewalk placement. They set the light pole bases in this location this week.

Peak and Prairie, the landscaping/irrigation subcontractor will also be placing irrigation conduit in this same area, ahead of the concrete sidewalk.

Two-way traffic on the eastbound lanes will remain in place as it has in the past few weeks. There will be traffic control devices throughout, and flaggers in the area during working hours to assist vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Please be aware that the flagging personnel are there for your safety. Please be courteous and respectful as you pass through the project.

There will be signs indicating closed areas. Please avoid walking in areas that are closed to pedestrian traffic for your own safety.

There will be trucks hauling material in and out of the site, concrete laborers and finishers, and other craftsmen moving around constantly. Revival the Musical is coming!!!

This production is an annual fund raiser for the Parker Task Force and is one of those feel good things to do around Parker. Below are some notes from the Director... Teri Todd.

"Last night the entire cast of Revival! gathered for the first full run-through of the show. For the choir, whose rehearsals have focused on music and choreography, it was the first time to see the Revival! story unfold on stage. For the cast, it was the first time to experience the music placed into the context of the show. As you might imagine, there were moments when it seemed the only thing happening was chaos. Yet, as one of the choir members walked past me at the end of rehearsal, he said: “This show is good. It’s really good!” Another choir member told me she’d had trouble getting to sleep (after a very late rehearsal) because of her excitement about all she’d seen and heard.

We were also blessed to hear from Jan and Clark Hastings about their work with the Parker Task Force (PTF). We were moved by their stories of helping individuals and families who had tumbled into unexpected financial quagmires. We were surprised by the breadth of help PTF can offer; from rental and utility assistance, to a food bank and job referral board – and more! We were saddened by the staggering growth of people needing help in our community. During just one sixteen hour period last week, PTF worked to serve more than fifty clients!

I guess all that’s left for me to say is: DON’T MISS REVIVAL! – the show that’s both a musical and a revival. Don’t let your friends or neighbors miss it either. The three show limited engagement runs this Friday and Saturday (8/22 & 23). Tickets (including a complimentary dessert/beverage bar) are $10 for the two evening performances (7:00 p.m.) and $8 for the Saturday matinée (1:00 p.m.). They are available through the church office (303-841-3979), or at the door. All proceeds benefit the amazing work of the Parker Task Force."

A 6-week divorce recovery group will be held for children (ages 7-11) and for adolescents (ages 12-16) whose parents are separated, currently going through a divorce or who are divorced. The child and adolescent groups will focus on coping skills and strategies to help them through this challenging time.

The adult group will provide a 4-week supportive educational class for individuals (with or without children) who are coping with marriage or relationship break-up. The adult class will meet at the same time and same building but in a different office as the child and adolescent groups, however, adults without children are invited to join the class as well.

Stop down to O'Brien Park in downtown Parker on Sunday, Aug. 10 from 1-3 p.m. as Whiskey Trip performs as part of the 2008 Concerts in the Park series! Free ice cream will be provided by the Parker Water and Sanitation District.

"They just don't make country music the way they used to…" or so said Ben O'Connor, leader of the country band, Whiskey Trip. O'Connor, who also plays upright bass in Halden Wofford's Hi-Beams, sees a honky tonk revival on the horizon. So, in efforts to re-make country "the way they used to," he enlisted the help of some friends. Together, the group brings back the danceable, hard-edged music of the 1960's and 70's, when such artists as Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Buck Owens and others made country cool. And now, after two years of rehearsals and club dates to solidify the repertoire, Whiskey Trip has emerged in 2007 as one of the most prominent revivalist country bands in all of Colorado.

Bring Your Neighbors to Party in the Park TODAY

On Tuesday, Aug. 5, neighborhoods throughout Parker are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 25th Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.

From 7 to 10 p.m, residents throughout Parker are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening at O'Brien Park. Parker's NNO event, Party in the Park, will be full of fun activities for the entire family. Bring your friends, neighbors, children, blankets and lawn chairs and come support NNO. The Police Department, Town of Parker, Target and Parker Fire-South Metro Fire Rescue Authority will have a variety of booths set up for everyone to enjoy including an interactive CSI Booth, face painting, sticker tattoos and visits from police officers and firemen. The Parker Police Explorers will be selling drinks as a fundraiser. At 8:30 p.m. a family friendly movie will begin on a 26-foot screen. Free popcorn will be available. This event is sponsored by the Town of Parker and Target.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organizing and fighting back.

The current 2008 10u AAA Parker Cyclones Baseball Club (1^st place AYL 10U AAA division; 3^rd place (of 20 top state teams) in the USSSA 10U AAA State Championship) is growing and now seeking experienced and dedicated players to complete our rosters. For the 2009 season, the club will be comprised of 2 age divisions – 10U and 11U – and will be competing in tournament baseball, as well as participating in league play through Arapahoe Youth League (AYL). Quality players interested in competitive baseball, are invited to reserve an appointment for selection tryouts. Parker Cyclones Baseball Club (a feeder program organization) was created to offer talented and motivated youth baseball players a greater opportunity for future recognition and to play against other competitive teams at a higher level. We are looking for talented, well-rounded and motivated players wanting to play and committed to staying together for several years, forming not only a winning Feeder baseball club, but friendships and memories that last a lifetime. Parker Cyclones Baseball organization is dedicated to more than just developing baseball players. The goal of our program is to create an environment that fosters development of a high level of playing skill and character values, promotes true sportsmanship, encourages teamwork, and instills a passion and dedication for the game of Baseball and life, all in a fun, competitive environment. All players will be considered for all infield and outfield positions and can earn a minimum of 2 positions of play. As our recognized players move into high school play (the foundation purpose of our program), they should be very well prepared (to feeder guidelines) and fully capable of playing at the necessary level. Players will have opportunities to improve their individual baseball skills, as well as learn team strategy, the dynamics of the game itself and advanced fundamentals of play with an emphasis on the teamwork, dedication and perseverance needed to play competitive baseball. A maximum of eleven boys will be chosen for each team. Limited roster spots are available.

These are alot of fun to plan on after church... bring a picnic lunch and some lawn chairs and spend the afternoon with your friends. The Town of Parker says: "Join us at O'Brien Park in downtown Parker on Sunday, Aug. 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. as the Hartman Band kicks off the Cultural Commission's 2008 Concerts in the Park series! Free ice cream will be provided by the Parker Water and Sanitation District.

The Hartman children all began music lessons by age five learning Suzuki violin. The older ones started competing at fiddle contests and were soon inspired to branch out and learn other instruments as well.

Jim, the father of the "tribe," always loved taking his little ones to concerts and soon spurred the children on to learn some songs as a group. The influence of a loving father is such a gift! Their first official performance was in the fall of 2001 where they played for the local farmer's market. The children were all smiles as they were richly rewarded with a wagon full of vegetables.

The Town of Parker says... "Do you want to get involved and make a difference in your community? Now is your chance! A regular Town Council election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4 to elect three Councilmembers to four-year terms and a Mayor to a four-year term. Serving in a Mayor or Councilperson position is a great way to help shape the future of the Parker community.

Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 5, individuals interested in running for Council can pick up a nomination petition at Town Hall, 20120 E. Mainstreet. Potential candidates must obtain the required number of qualified signatures and file them with the Town Clerk on or before Aug. 25. After the signatures on the nomination petition are verified by the Town Clerk, the applicant's name will be placed on the Nov. 4 ballot for position of Councilmember or Mayor.

To be eligible to run for office, candidates must be at least 18 years of age and be a registered elector of the Town. Additionally, candidates must be a current resident of Parker and resided in the Town for at least one year immediately preceding the election.

H2O'Brien Pool plans special activities for July 4

Weather forecasts are calling for a hot, sunny Independence Day this Friday. Beat the heat with a family trip to H2O'Brien pool. H2O'Brien will be open for business with special activities planned throughout the day.
Among the fun activities staff is planning are water balloon tosses, greased watermelon scrambles, a pop toss (we'll throw pop in the pool and let the kids swim for it!), swim relays and rubber duck races.
Open swim starts at 10 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. If your family is planning to attend fireworks at Town Hall, why not start your outing at the pool? Leave your car parked conveniently at O'Brien Park and walk the short distance down Mainstreet to the evening festivities!
Adult lap swim, normally 9 to 10 a.m. on weekdays, is 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. all this week through Friday, July 4. Little Squirt time, reserved for children 48 inches and smaller with an adult caregiver, is 9 to 10 a.m. weekdays, including July 4.
Admission to H2O'Brien Pool is $4 for Parker residents under 52 inches tall, $5 for residents over 52 inches tall. Non-resident rates are 50 cents higher per person. Please be prepared to show an ID as proof of residency. While the Parker Recreation Center is closed for maintenance, through July 6, Recreation memberships and passes may be used for pool admission. Lap swim at H2O'Brien is always included with Recreation memberships and visit passes, with the exception of Fieldhouse Fitness passes.

HawkQuest is bringing Birds of Prey to the Parker Fieldhouse Summer Day Camp on Thursday, July 10 at 11 a.m. with live eagles, owls, hawks and falcons.
HawkQuest is a recipient of Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education's Nonprofit Award for Excellence in Environmental Education.
In the Bird's of Prey one hour participatory program which is tailored to youth ages five to 12, students focus on the importance of different raptor species, their specially-adapted tools, and their role in our ecosystems.
Participants are able to observe the unique tools of the owl, the incredible talons and six-foot wingspan of the eagle, the aerodynamic features of the falcon, and the precision flying of the hawk.

I have attended these events quite a few times and they really are amazing and interesting to all ages!

Parker will continue its tradition of hosting the Parker Breakfast Station at the Cherry Creek Trail under the E-470 overpass for Bike to Work Day on Wednesday, June 25. Riders will enjoy refreshments provided by Panera Bread and Parker Nutrition the Daily Shake. The first 200 riders to stop at Parker's Breakfast Station will also receive an official Bike to Work Day T-Shirt, provided by Parker Adventist Hospital and a Town of Parker SPF lip balm. Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (C.P.T.E.D.) is a proactive crime fighting technique in which the proper design and effective use of parks, open spaces, building(s) and the surroundings can lead to a reduction in the fear and occurrence of crime as well as an improvement in the quality of life for citizens of the community. It is very important to realize CPTED principals may reduce the opportunity for crime, however programs should be implemented to tackle the ROOT CAUSE OF THE CRIMES affecting the areas where the assessments are performed.

The four key concepts of C.P.T.E.D. are:

> Natural Surveillance - Is a design concept intended to allow intruders and offenders to be easily viewable to people passing or using the property. Landscaping and lighting are two methods used to provide natural surveillance.

> Territorial Reinforcement -Is a strategy to create and/or extend the
property's sphere of influence, which is the perception that someone is in control of the area. This is done by using landscaping, pavement designs, signage and fences.

> Natural Access Control - This is intended to decrease the opportunity for offending by denying access to a crime target. Properly located entrances, exits, fencing, landscaping and lighting can discourage crime.

Exciting news! There are new buyers in place for the stores. The new store will be 'Crosswalk Christian Store and Cafe'.
They are planning a grand opening event on June 21 and have asked me to book some music throughout the day starting about 2pm. Please email me and let me know if you are available and interested at all and we can book bands about every 1 1/2 - 2 hours. It can be the whole band or an individual or 2. It will probably be in the parking lot just outside, at least until evening and maybe at all hours. We are just in the planning phase. If you know anyone else who would be appropriate for this day also, please let me know.

The Parker Police Department is looking for volunteer advocates for the Parker/Lone Tree Victim Services Unit. Advocates provide immediate crisis intervention and support for victims of crime (and surviving families in cases of death, domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes. Emotional support is provided, as well as information regarding available long-term support services. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and able to work nights and weekends. They must be willing to commit to at least one year of service. Applicants must posses an open and non-judgmental attitude towards victims and survivors. H2O'Brien Pool will be closed June 14 and 15 during the Parker Country Festival.
The pool will be open Thursday, June 12 and Friday, June 13 and will reopen Monday, June 16, but customers should plan ahead for parking lot restrictions as the Festival sets up and tears down.
H2O'Brien is open regular hours on July 4. Parker Recreation memberships may be used for H2O'Brien admission during the Recreation Center's maintenance closure, June 29 to July 6. The pool number is 720.851.5873.

Parker Police Department Citizen Police Academy

Each academy is an eight-week program that gives participants firsthand information about how the police department operates. Classes, combined with field trips and tours, will focus on criminal law, the drug task force, evidence, dispatch, firearms training (optional), traffic laws, accident reconstruction, DUI laws, Taser demonstrations, DARE and many other topics. All attendees will also participate in a graduation at the end of the program.
There are two more academies scheduled for 2008.

The summer academy begins Thursday, June 19 and requires a commitment of one night a week from 6 to 10 p.m. for eight weeks. All classes will be held on Thursday nights. The fall academy will begin on Sept. 4.

If you are looking for an opportunity to help immediately in the recovery process caused by the tornado that struck Windsor, CO and the surrounding area, here is a way to help.
“Clean-up workers are needed for the week of June 2-7. People or crews need to meet at Corner Stone Baptist Church at, 1200 Corner Stone Drive, Windsor Colorado 80550. Work hours are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Meals are provided by the Salvation Army which is set up in the Corner Stone parking lot.
Please call Delmar Schroeder at 970-405-3696 he is the jobs coordinator at the present time he is working out of the Corner Stone Church.

Also the Reception Center which is in the old Steele Market behind McDonalds on Main Street, Windsor, is needing volunteers to sort and receive donations.The Distribution Center located at 810 3rd. Street Windsor, (Mountain View Elementary) is also in need of volunteer support and help. Hours for both places is 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.”

The Rocky Mountain Conference Disaster Response Team and Betsy Keyack, one of the Conference United Methodist Volunteer in Mission Coordinators, will continue to be in dialog with Linda Pelletier and the members of the Windsor Church working to identify additional ways to help in the future.

The Town of Parker has assembled a group of local citzensand business owners to evaluate the need for a new police statoin. The meeting is considered an open house and the public is free to attend. Crime Bulletin, Parker Police looking or leads

This Parker Police Department Business Bulletin is being sent out to commercial businesses in and around the Town of Parker regarding a pattern or serial criminal activity affecting commercial locations.On Thursday, May 29, it was discovered that approximately six local businesses located on Cottonwood Drive had their front window or glass door smashed. It is believed these incidents occurred between 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 and 5:50 am on Thursday, May 29.Suspect(s) searched through cash registers and offices and it is unknown at this time the total amount of cash and property that might have been taken.

The Parker Police Department is still conducting their investigation into these incidents.Please review your safety/crime prevention procedures to help prevent further incidents.
1) Leave cash register drawers open and empty. This prevents damage to the cash register and prevents suspect(s) from entering the business if they can see that it is empty.
2) Lock cash/checks/Credit Card receipts up securely or remove from the store at the end of each business day.
3) If you have video surveillance check to make sure it is operating properly.
4) Provide alarm/security company with current contact information

Increased patrols will be conducted in areas identified as likely target areas by the Parker PD. However, individual businesses should advise their employees of the situation and review security.

Nothing But Net Elite Basketball in conjunction with AND1 Mix Tape Tour star Helicopter and the Parker Recreation Department are pleased to offer a week long basketball camp at the Parker Fieldhouse June 2 to 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Camp will consist of quality instruction from Nothing But Net staff for boys and girls ages six to 17 that emphasizes fundamentals first, games and prizes. Each camper will receive a Nothing But Net t-shirt and an autographed action photo from Helicopter. Lead instructor will be former DU assistant basketball coach Marcus Mason.

The latest on the Mainstreet construction saga..... to be continued

During the week of May 19, the contractor will continue to perform potholing for underground utilities to verify where they may conflict with the storm drain pipe installation. This operation is almost complete. We have located some utilities we were not expecting and as a result have some new conflicts to overcome. Xcel will be on site to begin adjustments of the gas mains on Monday of next week. This will require removing concrete pavement in various locations, on both the Eastbound and Westbound sides of Mainstreet.

Along with the pavement removal, they will also adjust the gas lines to make room for the new storm drain installation. We will be replacing the concrete paving in these areas with asphalt material on a temporary basis until the storm drain installation is complete and new concrete pavement can be placed. During this phase of the construction, there will be "moving areas" of no parking restrictions as they move from location to location along Mainstreet. "" No parking" signs will be placed at these locations to forewarn the traveling public. Today, Quest began relocating two telephone pedestals so the sidewalk can be widened.

These pedestals are east of the Ruth Chapel, and just east of Baskin Robbins. This will continue into next week also.Concrete Express will continue removing existing concrete and asphalt in the area of the Pikes Peak Parking lot, north of Mainstreet this week. It was necessary to remove more asphalt than was expected, as areas of gravel had old layers of asphalt under it that needed to be removed. Subgrade preparation of the extension of Pikes Peak to the north, and curb and gutter placement for the drive into the existing parking lots will begin.

The overflow parking that occurs to the east of the existing parking lot east of the Twenty Mile building is now closed off entirely to allow this construction to occur. This will be the case for quite some time. Temporary plastic fencing has been put up on each side of this area to block it off.The United States Postal Service removed the mail drop boxes that were just east of the Mountain Man entrance today. They decided that they are not going to reset them at a temporary location, but will set them back in the same general area when construction has been completed.

They assured us that the mail boxes at the Twenty Mile building entrance and the one on Pikes Peak south of Mainstreet will be able to handle the amount of dropped mail that is generated during the construction period. Thank you all for your patience and "see you next week."

Holiday Schedules for the Parker Recreation Center

The Parker Recreation Department would like to remind community members that some of the Town's recreation facilities will operate on modified schedules on Memorial Day, May 26. Customers are asked to please plan their visits accordingly.

The Parker Recreation Center will be open 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Memorial Day. The facility will operate a modified group fitness schedule that day. Classes scheduled are: Cycle at 5:40 a.m. and again at 9:30 a.m., Mega class from 8:30 to 10:05 a.m., Pumped Up at 10:15 a.m. and Ab Attack from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. The pool will close at 3:30 p.m. For more information call 303.841.4500.The Parker Fieldhouse will open at 7 a.m. and close at 4 p.m. on Memorial Day. Special climbing activities will be offered. Details are forthcoming.H2O'Brien Pool will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 24 though Aug. 17, when it switches to a weekend only schedule. H2O'Brien will be open regular hours for both Memorial Day and July 4, but closed June 14 and 15 during the Parker Country Festival.All facilities will return to normal schedules on May 27.

Local youth to perform It's Tough Being the Prince on Mainstreet Center stage
Parker Cultural Commission and Classis Acts present It's Tough Being the Prince on Saturday, June 7 at the Mainstreet Center.

Have you ever wondered what really happened after Sleeping Beauty woke up, especially when she is a princess with modern ideas? It's Tough Being the Prince is the delightful and humorous story of what the Prince had to endure to win the hand of the Princess. This play keeps the prince and the rest of the cast busy slaying dragons, swashbuckling with knights, and making friends with a retired dragon. The local cast features Coleman Connell as Prince Daring, Ben Davis as Barkely the Prince's trusted servant, Lilly Rhodes as Sleeping Beauty, Nick Parker as the King, Nikki Mueller as the Queen, Rachel Bell as Lavalips the Dragon, Megan Denning as the Half Dragon, Jason Hickman as the Captain of the Guards, and Brandon Collins, Kaesee Bumgarner, Ben Davis and Megan Denning as the Guards. The backstage crew consists of Cerise Mallano- Lighting Tech, Mackenzie Condon- Sound Tech, Becca Garbrick- Make-up Artist, Megan Timmons- Costume Designer, Katrina Davis- Prop Manager, Trent Davis and Josiah Rognmoe- Set Designers and Karlee Bumgarner- Assistant Director. It's Tough Being the Prince is Classic Acts' first youth theatre production in Parker. The play is written and directed by Carmella Gates, a public school teacher and a university professor for over 30 years. She has worked with regular students, students with special needs and second language learners. Gates has written a series of plays geared toward upper elementary and middle school actors and crew. Her plays provide an opportunity for youth to learn about classic literature and theatre in a fun, compelling way. As a bonus, her plays get rave reviews from the audience!

It's Tough Being the Prince will be presented on Saturday, June 7 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the Mainstreet Center, 19650 E. Mainstreet in downtown Parker. Tickets are $5 for ages three and older. Tickets are available in advance at the Parker Recreation Center.

Douglas County Young Marines

The Douglas County Young Marines are teaming up with Operation DVD to collect new and used DVDs to distribute to our local troops being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. The DVDs distributed to the troops may be the only safe form of entertainment they enjoy during their deployment.

To date, the unit has collected and shipped 2,300+ DVDs to OperationDVD’s distribution center, but now the effort is coming home, locally, to Denver! New and used DVDs are needed for our troops right here in Colorado!

Hess Road Construction and Closures

WOO HOO! This project is finally getting started. I've been hearing about Hess Road going through to I-25 for the last 10 years or so. This is just the part from Parker Road to Motsenbocker, but at least it's a start. Here's what the Town of Parker said.
Hess Road Closure Begins May 27

Beginning on Tuesday, May 27, Hess Road will be closed for approximately two months between the Parker Road and the Leesburg/Nate intersections for reconstruction. This closure is necessary to expedite construction of the road due the amount of regrading that will be taking place near the Hess and Parker Road intersection.

During the construction, drivers will still be able to travel north and south on Nate/Leesburg, but will not be able to turn east to Parker Road from that intersection.

Parker Library for Kidz Kulture! on May 17 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. to learn
about Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico's victory over
French troops on May 5, 1862.

Kids will create an art project with the help of the Parker Artist
Guild prior to the performance by the Parker Library. Kidz Kulture! takes

Have you ever wondered what really happened after Sleeping Beauty woke

for Classic Act's It's Tough Being the Prince and find out! This play
is the delightful and humorous story of what the Prince had to endure
to win the hand of the Princess, including slaying dragons,
swashbuckling with knights and making friends with a retired dragon.

Are you artistic, but not into acting? We need you, too! You can be a
member of the stage crew which designs sets, coordinates props, lights,
costumes, curtains and more. The success of the play depends on the
crew.

Auditions will be held on Tuesday, May 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for
ages 10 to 16. There will be a $65 participation fee due by May 15 if
selected to be a member of the cast or crew. We also encourage children
with disabilities to participate in this production.

Rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30
p.m. at the Mainstreet Center., located at 19650 E. Mainstreet.
Performances are Saturday, June 7 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets are $5 and will be
available at the Parker Recreation Center starting May 23.

Classic Acts is owned by Carmella Gates, author of 19 plays for
children based on classic literature and children's stories. She is a former
teacher who began writing and directing plays for her middle school
students and expanded them for her business.

New Sister Cities Program Looking For Participants

Calling all interested in participating with Parker's sister city
program! Sister Cities of Parker, Colorado, Inc. meets on the 1st and 3rd
Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Parker Town Hall. All are
welcome to attend as this exciting program gets underway.

The program will assist the Parker community in building citizen
relationships with foreign municipalities that are beneficial to the people
of Parker.

Sister Cities of Parker, Colorado, Inc. will be electing its first
Board of Directors on June 6. If you are interested in running for a seat
on the board you may submit a brief letter of intent on or before May
21. The letter should be submitted to Town Hall, 20120 E. Mainstreet,
Parker, CO, 80138 c/o J.D. McCrumb.

The board of directors will help establish the direction Parker's new
sister cities program will take, including membership options, areas and
regions of focus and program development. The first board will serve
for a term of one year.

"Miss Johnson's Trunk"

Miss Johnson's Trunk - A Historical Production written by Greg and Cindy Sweatt.

A glimpse of the history of Parker is explained with this exceptional and well-researched production piece, written by local playwrights, Greg and Cindy Sweatt. Taking place in the late 1940’s, this story is about a teacher in a one-roomed schoolhouse in Parker, during a blizzard. Since the students and teacher must wait out the storm, Miss Johnson finds a unique way to entertain her students, by opening her trunk pulling out artifacts from the past…and begins to tell tales about the history of Parker.
PAC is very excited about this upcoming production, as we plan for it to include our Interns, children from the community, the Historical Society, the Town of Parker and local residents that can trace their family roots through the history of Parker. We are planning to offer several performances as a field trip option for the 3rd graders attending the Parker Elementary Schools to enhance their scheduled curriculum of studying the history of Parker.

Parker Police Citizen Academy

Parker area residents are invited to attend the Parker Police
Department's eight-week citizen academy program. This program gives
participants firsthand information about how the police department operates.
Classes will focus on criminal law, the drug task force, evidence,
dispatch, firearms training (optional), traffic laws, accident reconstruction,
DUI laws, Taser demonstrations, DARE and many other topics. All
attendees will also participate in a graduation at the end of the program.

The classroom work, combined with field trips and tours, begins
Thursday, April 3 and requires a commitment of one night a week from 6 to 10
p.m. for eight weeks. All classes will be held on Thursday nights.

application at the Parker Police Department, located at 19600 E. Parker
Square Drive. Applications must be turned in to the Police Department no
later than March 20 at 5 p.m. Applications will be accepted on a
first-come, first-served basis. All applicants are subject to a background
check.

Participation is limited to 15 people ages 21 and older. Due to the
tremendous success of the program, citizen police academies will be held
